While this is a Chevy Chase fan-site it borrows it's name from Chevy's most prolific character, Irwin M. Fletcher, and his two greatest ever films - Fletch and Fletch Lives. It's only fair then that this page gives a little more information about everything Fletch.

Books
The Fletch legend comes from a superb series of novels from the award winning author Gregory Mcdonald. They tell the story of the exploits of journalist Irwin M. Fletcher who writes a newspaper column under the name of Jane Doe. Mcdonald's writing style is practically unique, relying almost 100% on dialogue and this lends the series a fast paced energy that few other books can match. While the Fletch books weren't released in the following order, it is believed this is the chronological order the books should be read in:

Fletch Won
Fletch Too
Fletch and the Widow Bradley
Fletch
Carioca, Fletch
Confess, Fletch
Fletch's Fortune
Fletch's Moxie
Fletch and The Man Who
Son of Fletch
Fletch Reflected

Until the beginning of this year most of these had gone out of print but fortunately most are being re-issued (USA only) so track them down on the Internet.

Movies
The first movie to be released based on the series of books was of course Fletch (1985). The movie does follow the basic plot of the book it's based on but as ever with movies there are a few differences. Overall though, this is a close adaptation of the novel and Chevy Chase playing the lead role has given the character from the books a face that the reader can accept. The movie itself is quite simply, a classic. This is the film that really cemented Chevy Chase's position as one of the greatest comedy actors of the 1980's. This is in no small part due to the closeness with which Chevy's own persona resembles that of the ultra-cool, super fast-talking Irwin Fletcher. The movie uses narration from Chevy himself to set certain scenes but is really an exhibition of some of the funniest comedy dialogue you are ever likely to hear. The superb casting of the other characters (in particular Richard Libertini as Irwin's boss, Frank) adds to the comic masterpiece we all know and love today.

The second movie was Fletch Lives (1989) which is not based on any of the novels. This becomes obvious with a storyline that is much weaker than the first and was just continuing the opportunity to let Chevy run riot with the one-liners again. It also takes the disguises Fletch uses one stage further and parades itself as a pure comedy. To this end the movie is superb and anyone who enjoyed quoting lines from the first film will have a field day with this second outing.

As of yet there is no third movie in the series although director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) has purchased the rights to the franchise and as a self confessed fanatic of the Gregory Mcdonald novels is expected to do the franchise justice. However, it looks likely that he'll begin with the very first book in the series (chronologically - it was one of the last to be released) Fletch Won. This means that Chevy's involvement looks unlikely as he'll be getting older while the Fletch character gets younger. If the movie does go ahead then I think it's safe to assume that the lead role will be taken by Smith regular Jason Lee who does bear more than the odd resemblance to Chevy himself. Kevin Smith has met with Chevy to discuss the possibility of including Chevy in the movie somewhere but to say the meeting wasn't a success would be understating it somewhat. The best that Chevy fans can realistically hope for is the narration duties to be handed over to him and a possible cameo part.

Soundtrack
The success of the first movie lead to a soundtrack album being released which I am fortunate enough to have a copy of. With a theme tune by Harold Faltermeyer and contributions from some of the stars of the time including John Farnham and Kim Wilde it's actually a cracking soundtrack album which still gets the odd play.
