"Beware
of the Dwarf," whispers the hitchhiker to the beautiful librarian (Goldie
Hawn) as he dies midway through a screening of "This gun is Mine.".
Suddenly Goldie is propelled into a world of wild chases, bizarre attempts
on her life, and deadly encounters with an assortment of weird underworld
characters. Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn teams with Chevy (Fletch) Chase
in his first starring motion picture assignment - and with hilarious results.
Chase plays the handsome San Francisco detective who becomes personally
and professionally involved with all the odd things happening to Goldie. |
Review:
Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase team up for the first time on film and it's not
a bad one either. To be honest Chevy isn't used that much and the scene stealing
moments are handed to Dudley Moore but there's enough in here to keep fans happy.
The story does tend to lumber on in places but it's well acted and does allow
Chevy to play the fall guy in a couple of scenes. From the opening shot where
Chevy catches Goldie's eyes and then proceeds to knock over a table full of
glasses ("My fault, very much my fault") you know that Chevy's stamped
his trademark authority on Hollywood in this, his first full movie. If it had
been shortened and perked up a bit in a few places it could have been a true
gem but it's still a worthwhile watch and I advise you do.
Funniest scenes:
Stanley Tibbets dancing to the Bee Gees while revealing the full debauchery
of his apartment to an unsuspecting Gloria.
The two old ladies playing scrabble and arguing about the hyphen...
Gloria's confrontation with the Bible salesman and the slapstick nature of his
fall out of the window including a rolling oil drum and open manhole.
The car chase in the stolen limousine with the two laughing Japanese tourists
in the back seat ("Kojak - bang bang?") waving their American flags.
Top lines:
Tony Carlson: "You're very pretty, with or without cleavage and
what do you say - would you like to take a shower?"
Gloria Mundy: "You should have been a doctor."
Tony Carlson: "Okay, we'll play whatever you like."
Gloria Mundy: "Hey wait a minute - it's my ass they're after!"
Tony Carlson: "You're right. That was a stupid, glib, chauvinistic
remark and I apologise. It is your ass they're after and it's my job to see
to it that I get there first."
Fletch UK Rating: 7 out of 10
