A captivating comedy that boasts as it's star a simple, charming mongrel dog and includes in it's supporting cast such noted performers as Omar Sharif, Robert Morley and John Stride. A thriller and family entertainment movie all rolled into one. Produced and directed by Joe Camp. Private eye Chevy Chase is murdered while investigating a politics and sex mystery in London. Reincarnated as Benji, a dog with human feelings, he finds himself being able to solve as Benji what he had been unable to accomplish in human form. And at the same time become romantically involved with pretty magazine reporter Jane Seymour. |
Review:
For a film where Chevy plays a detective who dies and returns to Earth as a
dog you'd expect this to be a little madcap. It isn't. This movie has been filmed
at an incredibly slow pace and half way through you realise that there's no
depth to it and pray that at least Chevy will throw out a few good lines somewhere.
He doesn't. If this was meant as a children's film then it's lacking colour
and energy. If it wasn't then why the hell did they hire Chevy to narrate a
dog with no jokes? This isn't so much a bad film as a 'nothing' film. I must
have watched it six or seven times now and each time I'm fooled into thinking
that something funny will happen in a minute. It never does. If you're a female
Chevy fan then you probably needn't bother with this movie. If you're a male
fan then fast forward to the bit where Jane Seymour gets in the bath.
Funniest scenes:
Chevy Chase (in human form) trying to get around a rain soaked London and finally
ending up in the mini of a less than manly Freddie. And all the while Paul McCartney
sings the superb track 'Arrow Through Me'.
Mr. Higgins explaining the details of Browning's death using a lightsaber -
"We had it before Star Wars".
The German lady taking a shine to Browning as she arranges his reincarnation
as a dog.
BJ joining Jackie (Jane Seymour) in the bath - "Yeehah!".
Browning describing how BJ ascended the building and escaped into the sky -
"You don't believe me do you?".
Top lines:
Browning: "Are you in organised crime?"
Bart: "I'm in Parliament."
Browning: "Six to one ..."
Mr. Higgins: "You certainly can't go back in your own body."
Browning: "Why not?"
Mr. Higgins: "It has a hole in it."
BJ: "I don't like being cute. I don't like being fluffy. And I want
some frigging hands."
