Christmas Vacation Woohoo! It's almost Christmas so I have an excuse for making the family watch Christmas Vacation every night for the next month! And so do you as it's now available on Region 2 DVD (click link on right to access item at play.com). The only feature of note is an audio commentary that sadly does not include Chevy but those present (Director, Producer, Ellen, Rusty, Cousin Eddie and Cousin Catherine) make some interesting comments and all acknowledge Chevy's comic ability. If you don't get the DVD then UK viewers can catch it on Christmas Day when it's showing on 'Five' at 21:20 - the same time as 'Only Fools and Horses' so videotapes at the ready. You can read my review of the movie here.

The review of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is coming I promise - hopefully in time to coincide with it's scheduled DVD R2 release later this month. In the meantime a little snippet from the December 2003 edition of UK movie magazine 'Empire' from an interview with Dan Aykroyd:

Q. Was there any rivalry amongst the SNL cast about which one of you would make it big first?
A. Chevy Chase was the first to make it huge - people would recognise him in the street: "Hey, Chubby Chase, look at Chubby Chase." Everybody knew who he was. He also was the first to start on a movie career and maybe Belushi was a little jealous. But I liked Chevy and was sorry to see him leave the show. He's one of the master physical comedians. I think you can place Buster Keaton and Chevy in the same sentence and be pretty safe there.

So there you go - I'm sure 'Chubby' would be pretty pleased with these comments from his long-time buddy despite Dan Aykroyd practically ruining Chevy's career by casting him in Nothing But Trouble...

Vacuums

Trying to cast aside the talk of whether Chevy will be involved in any part of the new Fletch movie, I thought I'd try to pick up on other Chevy projects. There are a number of smaller movies listed at imdb.com that have not progressed at all for ages and I'd love to know if anyone has any updates on any of these. It appears that Unleashed is now under the title of The Karate Dog and I am expecting to hear postive news on this later this year but little else. I am most interested in Vacuums that also stars the superb British comic Lee Evans and have attached a photograph of Chevy from this movie that made me laugh just looking at it. But this movie is over a year old now so what's happening?

Fletch Won...Fletch Won...Fletch Won...Fletch Won...Fletch Won...Fletch Won...Fletch Won

It's happening. After far too long of Fletch Won and it's on...off saga this week has finally seen the announcement that the movie will begin filming in January 2004. Miramax have agreed to let director Kevin Smith bring to the screen the inspiration for his writing with the first (chronologically) of Gregory Mcdonald's Fletch novels. The major news is that Smith regular and Chevy lookalike Jason Lee is not in the running for the lead role. Instead the contenders already named are Ben Affleck, Jimmy Fallon, Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler and Will Smith. Despite spending the last three years singing the praises of Jason Lee and confirming his suitability for the role, Smith has now said that Lee would have been more like Chevy as Fletch than the character in the novels that Smith really wants to bring to the screen. The word from Gregory Mcdonald after reading the initial draft is that Smith has kept the script very faithful to the book and distant from the Chevy movies.

I've avoided entering into the Fletch Won discussions on whether Smith is the right man for the job and who should play the lead role as it was only going to happen at all if Smith got to do it anyway. Now I'll have my say: I like Kevin Smith's movies - I've got all of them on DVD and while there's too many cursives and the films take some getting used to I really do enjoy these films now. The best thing about all of Smith's movies though is Jason Lee. He's always given the scene stealing lines but he carries them off with style and it's clear from watching each of his movies how well he's progressed as an actor (brilliant in Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky). He is as near to Chevy's Fletch as there is currently available and he is a Fletch fan. I was introduced to Fletch through Chevy's movies and not the books. I suspect this is the case for most of us and as such Chevy is Fletch in my eyes. Jason Lee could have done this style of Fletch justice but seeing as Smith is sticking closely to the Fletch character in the novels - what the hey? So accepting it's not going to be in Chevy's style means that I have to consider the short list of actors differently. Here's my opinion with marks out of 10:

Ben Affleck - similar to the Fletch described in the novels and does have some charm. 8
Jimmy Fallon - too OTT for the Fletch character - funny but unproven in a feature length role. 5
Brad Pitt - best actor of the lot by far and intriguing but ultimately not as I see Fletch. 7
Adam Sandler - just not good enough as a comedian or actor I'm afraid. 5
Will Smith - slightly too much for the Fletch character and that's without stating the obvious. 6

It's not all doom and gloom though - the film's getting made and I'm sure it will give a new lease of life to Chevy's classics reminding the World what a supreme comic performer Chevy was. I expect Smith to make a good movie but fear we're gonna get a movie far removed from the two movies we know and love.

Today's Sun newspaper (possibly the most infamous of the British tabloids) published a recent video store chain (Choices) poll of the funniest movies of all time. The result is both great and slightly surreal news for Chevy fans as one of his classics placed second! Not Fletch, not Vacation - no this time it was European Vacation! Yes, amazingly the often criticised 1985 sequel came second only to 'Life Of Brian' as the funniest movie ever! I assure you I didn't rig the voting but news like this makes you realise there's still enough interest to warrant Chevy making his fifth installment in the Vacation franchise (not counting the Cousin Eddie spin-off currently in production) and making a box-office success of it. For reference the full top ten read:
(1) Life of Brian, (2) European Vacation, (3) Blazing Saddles, (4) Bridget Jones's Diary, (5) The Wedding Singer, (6) Dumb and Dumber, (7) Airplane!, (8) When Harry Met Sally, (9) The Holy Grail, (10) Some Like It Hot.

Fletch Lives

Fletch Lives Lives

It's the second reason for running this site in the first place and today I bring you a treble whammy of Fletch Lives updates. Firstly, following last month's DVD updates comes the best news yet in that Fletch Lives is due for a Region 1 release on 2nd September! It's just a vanilla disc unfortunately but the perfect opportunity to replace ageing VHS copies of the classic movie. Secondly, I have finally finished the 'Fletch UK' review of Fletch Lives. Despite bad reviews from the critics I think it's an absolute classic and as much fun as the first one. It would be fair to say my favourite Fletch movie is usually the last one I watched and I've just seen this one. The final dose of Fletch Lives news is that I have found another gem on ebay in a set of 10 lobby cards from the movie's theatrical release in 1989! These superb photographs (8 colour, 2 b&w) have been added to the Fletch page and I'll try and turn a few into some decent wallpaper images soon.

Some DVD updates for you to avert you from the fact I still haven't published the review of Fletch Lives. Firstly, there is the Region 2 release of Orange County on 7th July. It's not a bad film but Chevy's cameo appearance gives him about the same amount of screen time he had in LA Story. However, if you've been dithering over the purchase of a multi region DVD player then dither no more as to compliment the Chevy commentary on R1 Europen Vacation not available in the UK we have news of a R1 20th Anniversary Special Edition of the original Vacation! The whole cast are back for a commentary and Harold Ramis is also involved so let's hope he can track down some deleted scenes and outtakes. Not only this but there is the R1 release of Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Despite some bad reviews at the time this is a good quality Chevy movie that fans should definitely get hold of. And in other news I've been back on ebay and am now the proud owner of a Japanese import LP for the Foul Play Soundtrack. This ebay addiction is turning into something of a problem...

Fletch Promo 1 Quite who is the strangest out of the buyers and sellers you find on ebay? Perhaps it's the people who find these amazing things to sell or maybe it's the people who choose to buy them. Whatever, a meeting of two such people resulted in the sale and purchase of an original promotional leaflet for Fletch's cinema release in the UK from 1985. And I've decided that after forking out £4.15 (inc. P&P) that the idiot who buys them is definitely the oddest of them all. Fletch Promo 2

Caddyshack II I've now added a review of the golfing sequel Caddyshack II. This is the movie that separates Chevy Chase fans - there's those who despise it and then there's me. At least that's the impression I get from all I read about this film. While I don't think it's a great movie by any stretch of the imagination I refuse to knock it as a straight comparison with the first movie as they are a good eight years and sizeable budget apart. Nonetheless, it also appears in the IMDB bottom 100 so perhaps it is just me. Please mail me to let me know your thoughts on the two movies and see if I am the only fan of the sequel...

I've finished a review of one of Chevy's more subtle comedies with the great Funny Farm. For those not familiar with the reviews section on this site you'll find this new review along with several of Chevy's films on the Movies page. If you have any of your own comments for Chevy's films you'd like to add to these pages then please e-mail me and I will gladly add them for you. Funny Farm

Ellie Weingardt I recently contacted actress Ellie Weingardt (A League of Their Own, Just Visiting, Save the Last Dance) who plays Chevy's wife in his most recent movie Bad Meat to ask about Ellie's experiences working with Chevy. I am very pleased to say that Ellie was kind enough to respond with the following message:

"Working with one of the great comic geniuses of our time is indescribable. First he's tall (very), fit, and a looker. He's funny and watching him go to work and create hysterical moment after moment is priceless. (After all, He's Chevy Chase and I'm not!).

He's game for anything. So working with him is a blast. He's got great ideas and isn't afraid to help others look good. He was kind enough to set everyone at ease complimenting our entire crew. He's a real gentleman with an outrageous sense of humor like the two authors of this meaty work, Scott Dikkers and Michael Hirsch.

I had to scream and yell at him playing the quintessinal "shrewish wife," at Scott's behest. Was it fun to do scenes with Chevy? I floated on air.
"

You can find out more about Ellie's other work including numerous stage appearances and voice-overs at her web-site http://www.ellieweingardt.com and details about Bad Meat at IMDB.

To coincide with my review of Three Amigos the similarly madcap trio of Dutch Chevy fans have also announced the return of their own web-site. For those who remember the previous Dutch site which went AWOL about a year ago you will know what to expect from this stoned out crew. Everyone else should find out for themselves by paying them a visit at the Dutch Chevy Chase Fanclub which is looking great and promising loads of Chevy stuff in the near future. Three Amigos

Spies Like Us "Ooh ooh, what do you do? No-one else can dance like you, So what's all the fuss? There ain't nobody that Spies Like Us." Hardly Paul McCartney's greatest lyric but the film's a real chuckle and at least the theme song gets that much across. I've now added a review of Spies Like Us and in watching it again have realised just what a great film it is. Forget the Cold War setting and just enjoy a huge number of great one-liners and some nice interplay with Dan Aykroyd. Next up is Three Amigos so I guess I'll be humming "My little buttercup" as an introduction to the next site update.

Apologies for not updating over Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. This site actually celebrated it's first Birthday around mid-December but I was too busy watching Christmas Vacation back-to-back to update the site. Can I thank all those who have visited the site in it's first year and especially those who have taken the time to e-mail me or fill in the Guestbook. This is my first web-site and I have really appreciated all the encouragement I have received from Chevy fans the World over and particularly those running their own sites who have sent me very kind notes and helped promote my site. I should get back into my stride over the next week or two and publish a review to another of Chevy's finest movies, Spies Like Us so here's to the next year and hopefully one that will bring a number of new movies for Chevy.
