Trivia
The
title is officially Say Anything... with the three trailing
dots included
Robert Downey Jr rejected the role of Lloyd Dobler, while
Christian Slater auditioned before director Crowe
insisted John Cusack play the lead
Producer James L Brooks requested that Cameron Crowe
wrote the story in prose before he started the full screenplay
The Smithereens track A Girl Like You was commissioned
and written directly for the movie but ultimately rejected as
it gave too much of the plot away
Real life kickboxing champion Don 'The Dragon' Wilson
plays the role of Dobler's sparring partner
Peter Gabriel requested a copy of the movie before agreeing
to his song being used. His reservations over the drug overdose
scene highlighted that he was accidentally sent a copy of the
John Belushi biopic Wired by mistake

"She's
gone. She gave me a pen. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."
Lloyd Dobler begins his quest to attain the unattainable in the form
of the beautiful grade A student Diane Court. While Diane surprises
nearly all by returning Lloyd's advances, it's Diane's father James
who seems least pleased about losing his daughter to Lloyd. Kick-boxing
fanatic Lloyd must now accept the challenge of winning over both at
a time when Diane and James' private lives are about to be turned upside
down by a visit from the IRS.

"What
I really want to do with my life, what I want to do for a living, is
I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at it."
skyjude review
I must be more of a romantic than I thought as I love this film and
it's probably as good a romantic comedy as you'll find. The excellence
of John Cusack makes it easier to enjoy for the guys amongst us as he
plays the mildly obsessive and enthusiastic Lloyd chasing the dream
girl. What really makes this film stand out from it's many contemporaries
though is Cameron Crowe's superb script. Chock full of witty and clever
one-liners it's never less than entertaining and it does contain one
of those scenes that stand out in movie history. Now symbolic with all
attempts to reconcile a broken relationship - Cusack holding the stereo
aloft is a wonderful moment in a sparkling directorial debut from Cameron
Crowe.

5 Reasons for Watching Say Anything...
[5]
The
keymaster gets attacked!
"You must chill!". In a film that curiously seems to
change from being a comedy, to a romance and even a sad drama towards
the end - it is in the early comedy segment that we get the laugh out
loud moment as Lloyd the keymaster gets jumped on by a guy in no state
to drive.
[4] Kickboxing
- sport of the future
Lloyd is working out in the ring and doing particularly well until Diane
walks in. Then clunk - a foot in the nose and he's down in another great
comic moment.
[3]
The guys lend their advice
Not content with only ever getting advice from his female friends D.C.
and Corey, Lloyd seeks out some guys for relationship advice - "That
was a mistake".
[2] John
Cusack
A great starring role for that rare breed of actor that, for differing
reasons, guys seem to like as much as the girls.
Having already impressed in earlier hits such as The Sure Thing
and Eight Men Out, it is Say Anything that defined the
type of cool, intelligent and romantic character that John Cusack has
made his own ever since.
[1] "In Your Eyes"
The moment after a break-up that all girls desire and all blokes wish
they'd thought of. Lloyd Dobler lifts his stereo high above his head
outside Diane's bedroom playing the song they first shared an intimate
moment to. And what a fine choice of song - Peter Gabriel's brilliant
In Your Eyes, bringing goosebumps to all those watching.
Say
Anything... quotes
Corey Flood: Diane Court doesn't
go out with guys like you. She's a brain.
D.C.: Trapped in the body of a game show hostess.
Diane Court: Having taken a few classes at the University
this year, I have glimpsed our future. And all I can say is - go back.
Constance Dobler: Why do you eat that stuff? There's no food
in your food.
Corey Flood: I wrote sixty-three
songs this year. They're all about Joe. And I'm going to sing each and
every one of them tonight.
Mike Cameron: I don't know you very
well, you know, but I wanted to ask you. How'd you get Diane Court to
go out with you?
Lloyd Dobler: I called her up.
Mike Cameron: But how come it worked?
I mean, like, what are you?
Lloyd Dobler: I'm Lloyd Dobler.
Mike Cameron: This is great. This
gives me hope. Thanks.
Corey Flood: Hi Joe, How are you?
I love you.
Joe: I love you too.
Corey Flood: You invade my soul.
Joe: I want to get back together,
Mimi is gonna go to college and I'm gonna be alone and I'm gonna break
up with her before she leaves. Have sex with me.
Mark: Give me my Firebird keys!
Lloyd Dobler: You
must chill! You must chill! I have hidden your keys! Chill!
Mark: Ehhh, I love you man.
Lloyd Dobler: Alright, I love you
too. Go to sleep.
Diane Court: Nobody knew me before
tonight.
Lloyd Dobler: They knew of you.
Now they know you.
Lloyd Dobler: I don't want to sell
anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want
to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed,
or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold,
bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.
Lloyd Dobler: Oh, you must think
I'm a dick.
Diane Court: No, Lloyd, we shared
the most intimate thing two people can share.
Lloyd Dobler: You shared it with
a dick.
Lloyd Dobler: Maybe I didn't really
know you. Maybe you were just a mirage. Maybe the world is full of food
and sex and spectacle and we're all just hurling towards an apocalypse,
in which case it's not your fault. I've been thinking about all these
things and you're probably standing there monitoring. And one more thing,
about the letter. Nuke it. Flame it. Destroy it. It hurts me to know
it's out there. Later.
D.C.: Why don't you just call her
again?
Lloyd Dobler: I draw the line at
seven unreturned phone calls.
D.C.: Lloyd, why do you have to
be like this?
Lloyd Dobler: 'Cause I'm a guy.
I have pride.
Corey Flood: You're not a guy.
Lloyd Dobler: I am.
Corey Flood: No. The world is full
of guys. Be a man. Don't be a guy.
Lloyd Dobler: I got a question.
If you guys know so much about women, how come you're here at like the
Gas 'n' Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers, no
women anywhere?
Joe: By choice, man.
Corey Flood: Have you ever gotten
a letter like this?
D.C.: I've dreamed about it.
Lloyd Dobler: You think it's too
much?
Corey Flood: Get ready for greatness
Lloyd.
Lloyd Dobler: One question. Do you
need someone, or do you need me? Forget it, I don't really care.
Diane Court: Nobody really thinks this will work, do they?
Lloyd Dobler: You just described every great success story.

In
Your Eyes
Love I get so lost, Sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
All
my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

Cameron
Crowe
Say Anything marked Crowe's debut as director although
he had previously written the screenplays for both Fast Times
At Ridgemont High and The Wild Life.
Following the success of Say Anything, Crowe has since directed
each of the movies he has also written screenplays for.
This prestigious list includes Singles, Almost Famous,
Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown but it was with
Jerry Maguire that he secured his biggest hit.
Each film has a distinctive style based on Crowe's superb writing
- a career that began as a journalist for Rolling Stone
magazine.
This is never better shown than in the semi-autobiographical
Almost Famous which is another fabulous Cameron Crowe
film I can heartily recommend to fans of Say Anything.

John Mahoney
Legendary now for his long running role as Martin Crane in Frasier,
John Mahoney puts in a wonderful performance as Diane's
father in Say Anything.
Playing the divorced father who has devoted his life to giving
his daughter all he can, Mahoney also gets the tough job of
playing a character losing everything in an instant.
It is the side-story of the IRS fiasco that really gives Say
Anything a dramatic and actually quite sad twist.
In the hands of John Mahoney this becomes a very believable
element that adds greatly to the experience of this movie.
